Cistercian sisters of Butende Monastery

Who are the Cistercians?

The name Cistercian derives from the word Cisteaux (Cisto) which means a swampy land.  Cisteaux is found in France where our three founders (Sts. Robert, Alberic and Stephen Harding) started the Cistercian monastic life in 1098, which is now known as; Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, O.C.S.O.   Our Order is for both men and women and we are all over the world

We are also known as Trappistines. And above all our founders of O.C.S.O reformed the monastic Benedictine life which St. Benedict had started at Molsme in France.

We are called the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance because we do not run schools or hospitals; that is: we do not involve ourselves in active apostolate. We live a hidden apostolate based on three pillars; prayer, work (manual labour), and spiritual reading.  We live the hidden life of of the Holy family of Nazareth, as Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived.

About the Cistercian sisters Butende

OUR FOUNDRESSES IN 1964

The Cistercians began as a “Mustard Seed which grew into a huge tree, spread its branches to the whole world up to Africa-Uganda, Masaka, Butende in 1964 brought by the sisters of the Abbey of Onze Lieve Vrouw Van Konigsoord in the Netherlands.  They were thirteen Dutch nuns who left their country and came to Uganda, Masaka diocese to start monastic life at Butende, so that by God’s grace they give African girls the benefit to serve God in the Cistercian monastic life.  We are in Ugandan, in one of its cities called Masaka, in East-Africa.  Butende means: Praise; thus our monastery is called; Our Lady of Praise, Abbey.    O.C.S.O is under the patronage of our Blessed Mother Mary, that is why our monastery is called; “Our Lady of Praise…….”

We belong to the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance; O.C.S.O which is for both men and women.Read more
